U.S. Representative Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., a proponent of health privacy and abortion rights, passed away Friday after sustaining an injury the previous week, The New York Times reports. Among the accomplishments of her 16 terms in the House, Slaughter was the lead sponsor of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act to prevent both employer and insurance discrimination based on a person’s genetic information. Introduced in 1995, GINA was finally enacted in 2008. Slaughter was chairwoman of the rules committee from 2007 to 2010, co-chairwoman of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, and co-leader of the Congressional Arts Caucus.
