Michael Feuer, the city attorney of Los Angeles, filed a lawsuit accusing the Weather Channel app of deceptive practices by collecting, sharing and profiting from users’ location data, The New York Times reports. The lawsuit argues that the company misled users when it requested permission to track location data for localized weather reporting and that it failed to clearly state its data practice details in its privacy policy. “Ideally this litigation will be the catalyst for other action — either litigation or legislative activity — to protect consumers’ ability to assure their private information remains just that, unless they speak clearly in advance,” Feuer said.
