In yet another step in what has become an historic week in the annals of privacy law, the European Parliament’s LIBE Committee formally voted on and approved the General Data Protection Regulation and the Directive governing data transfers for law enforcement and judicial purposes. The committee backed Tuesday’s informal agreement between the Parliament and Council, 48 to four, with four abstentions. Green MEP and Rapporteur Jan Philipp Albrecht said, “the new rules will give businesses legal certainty and chances for competition.” Likewise, the LIBE Committee backed the Directive 53 to two, with one abstention. The Parliament’s lead on the Directive, Marju Lauristin, said, “How police and criminal authorities use personal data can affect our lives to a great extent. It, thus, has to be done correctly and under appropriate legal framework.”
