In a letter to Federal Trade Commission Acting Chair Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, a group of legislators called for the commission to take enforcement action against menstruation-tracking applications that share women’s personal health data without consent. U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., and Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., said the FTC can use its authority under the Health Breach Notification Rule, enabling financial and other penalties to be imposed on companies that violate notification requirements for exposure of health data.
