Lawsuits have been filed under the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act against numerous Illinois employers for requiring employees to supply their biometric data, Illinois News Network reports. BIPA, which allows employers to ask for permission to collect biometric data, also makes requirements for properly storing and destroying the data. Christopher Dore, partner at law firm Edelson PC, said the practice of collecting biometric data is “being presented as a condition of employment. This is not a choice that consumers have to not use a service. If they want the job, they have to submit their information.” The lawsuits also claim that employers are failing to ensure necessary data security requirements.
