A planned U.K. “security by design” law to improve the security of consumer devices will include smartphones, TechCrunch reports. The upcoming legislation, which builds on a security code of practice for Internet of Things device manufacturers introduced in 2018, will require smartphone and device makers to inform customers at the time of sale of how long the device will receive software updates, as well as ban manufacturers from using universal default passwords.
