Cybersecurity and privacy professionals are launching a crowdfunding campaign to build a new social media platform as a privacy-aware alternative to Facebook, the Financial Times reports. Backed by Email Encryption Software Creator Philip Zimmerman and KPN Telecom Chief Information Security Officer Jaya Baloo, the social media platform Openbook will be “open source, zero tracking, zero spying, zero ads” and will share 30 percent of its revenue with charitable causes. Openbook Founder and Chief Executive Officer Joel Hernandez said that while privacy was the impetus for Openbook’s creation, the platform also aims to be less addicting. When the Kickstarter campaign began Tuesday, Hernandez said, “We really want this initial effort driven by what we believe in, not really a business model or capital.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
