Microsoft Vice President for EU Government Affairs John Frank emphasized that Microsoft’s Electronic Communications Privacy Act’s ongoing search warrant case against the U.S. Department of Justice was about upholding user privacy, he writes in a blog post. “We [at Microsoft] believe that U.S. authorities should work within the international framework for obtaining customer data stored outside the United States,” Frank says. “We also believe that a multi-stakeholder dialogue can lead to a sustainable international legal framework for the internet and data centers that protects the privacy and security of people and organizations, and continues to enable data to flow freely over the internet and across borders.” Meanwhile, Reuters reports that organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and The Washington Post have filed amicus briefs in support of Microsoft.
