EU Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová and Personal Information Protection Commissioner of Japan Haruhi Kumazawa released a joint statement on a meeting they held on the state of data protection. The two commissioners spoke on their mutual agreement to reach a status of mutual adequacy. The goal for both commissioners is to have the European Economic Area be recognized by the PIPC as having equivalent standards found under Article 24 of Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information and for Japan to receive its adequacy status under the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
