Plans to install 15,000 closed-circuit TV cameras throughout Johannesburg suburbs in an effort to combat crime has raised questions over how the data will be collected and used, the Daily Maverick reports. Acknowledging concerns and the crime rate, the city of Johannesburg said, “careful consideration must be given in how technology is used, to balance the constitutional rights to privacy and the right to live in a safe and secure environment.” Additionally, the company contracted for the project, Vumacam, is not registered with the country’s regulatory body for the security industry, the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority. Vumacam states it is acting in accordance with the anticipated Protection of Personal Information Act. Calls have been made for the company’s privacy impact assessment to be made public.
