The Japan Times reports a recent survey by Kyodo News revealed that 2.68 million pieces of Japanese personal information stored by 104 organizations were exposed by various data breaches in 2018. The survey showed MS&Consulting in Tokyo was affected more than any organization as 570,000 items of personal data were exposed, including email addresses, passwords and phone numbers. The list of breached organizations also included hotel operators and universities. “Businesses are required to more strictly manage personal information, as their increasingly globalized operations result in more frequent transmission of such data between (Japan and) overseas,” said Japan Institute of Information Security professor Harumichi Yuasa, who added that Japan needs a law requiring companies to notify the government and affected individuals of data breaches in a timely manner.
