Ireland’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner says it will “step up” audits of internet-of-things devices after it co-released a study last week conducted with 25 other data protection authorities on wearable fitness trackers and smart electricity meters, in which it found “alarming shortfalls in the management of personal data by developers and suppliers,” The Irish Independent reports. The study found three-quarters of device manufacturers did not tell customers how to delete their information, while two-thirds of manufacturers failed to inform users the methods for storing information, and three-fifths did not notify users on data collection processes. “The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner is planning to scale up investigative and audit work in this area in 2017,” said the DPC’s John Rogers. “The purpose of these audits will be to gauge compliance with the Data Protection Acts and to work with companies to ensure that their products are meeting the required standards.”
