The Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee has been informed the budget for the Irish Data Protection Commission has increased 800% since 2014, The Irish Independent reports. The DPC’s budget allocation has risen from 1.9 million euros in 2014 to 15.2 million this year. The PAC was told the funding increases were a result of the preparation the DPC needed in order to handle its enhanced role under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Department of Justice and Equality Secretary General Aidan O’Driscoll said the DPC has been able to use the additional funding to recruit more staff members.
