Ireland's Data Protection Commission has announced it is opening a statutory inquiry into Google Ireland Limited's personal data-processing practices related to its online Ad Exchange. The DPC stated the inquiry will examine whether the processing at various stages of an advertising transaction is compliant with EU General Data Protection Regulation provisions. The investigation was launched in part from the DPC's own vigilance but was also based on submissions from organizations such as private web browser Brave, which had suspicions of improper data use by Google dating back to last year. “The Irish Data Protection Commission’s action signals that now — nearly one year after the GDPR was introduced — a change is coming that goes beyond just Google,” Brave Chief Policy Officer Johnny Ryan said in a statement.
