Federal investigators say they accessed encrypted Signal messages sent before the Jan. 6, 2021, riot on the U.S. Capitol and used them as evidence to charge the leader of a far-right militia group and other defendants, CNBC reports. A complaint filed by the Department of Justice refers to Signal messages without explaining how they were accessed. While the DOJ, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Signal representatives did not respond to requests for comment, CNBC reports it is possible a participant in the Signal chats provided the messages.
