Internet censors in China are displaying location tags beneath social media users’ posts to combat disinformation campaigns, The New York Times reports. The tags are based on a user’s IP address and those appearing to access the internet from abroad are treated as foreign spies, with some accounts being deleted. A hashtag calling for the tags to be revoked accrued 8,000 posts and was viewed more than 100 million times before it was censored.
