The New York Times reports an international eight-month search for a Minnesota couple believed to have participated in destructive protests “exposed an emerging global surveillance system.” Cellphone tracking, surveillance cameras and facial recognition software, including a system blacklisted by the U.S. government in 2019, were used to track the couple from Minnesota to Mexico, where they were arrested. Investigators used surveillance footage and smartphone photos and videos as evidence in cases stemming from the protests.
