The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights announced a $1 million settlement with Aetna Life Insurance related to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act violations. The fine stems from three data breaches in a span of six months that combined to affect more than 18,000 individuals. In addition to the monetary penalty, Aetna will adopt a corrective action plan that includes two years of monitoring.
