Two Indian students are challenging the recent data sharing agreement between WhatsApp and Facebook, Bloomberg reports. Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi have filed a public-interest litigation in the Delhi High Court, hoping to have WhatsApp’s recent policy updates scaled back. The two students argue the policy changes put the security, safety and privacy of user data at risk, while saying the term “user consent” has no meaning in India, as most individuals cannot read or comprehend the alterations. The two-judge bench presiding over the case is asking WhatsApp, Facebook, the Indian government, and the country’s telecommunications regulator to file their stance for the court.
