The COVID-19 pandemic expedited India's plans to create a centralized database containing the health data of its 1.3 billion citizens, Reuters reports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Health Authority Director Praveen Gedam both acknowledged India is moving ahead with its plan to ease pressure on the country's health care system. However, Access Now Asia Policy Director Raman Jit Singh Chima pointed out the move on health data "is being done in the absence of a data protection law and data protection authority."
