The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers released a position statement endorsing privacy engineering as an emerging field. In the statement, the IEEE writes that as personal data becomes increasingly important, the role of technologists has evolved to build and maintain systems that respect privacy expectations. Adopted by the organization's board of directors, the IEEE pledged its support for research efforts to systematize engineering approaches, process and technology standardization efforts, educational programs, and the engagement of technologists to understand privacy implications. Most recently, the IEEE announced it would offer a live virtual event on blockchain technology to provide professional development to engineers.
