U.K. Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham has written to all of the country's major political parties to remind them of their legal obligations when contacting potential voters during the General Election, an Information Commissioner's Office press release states. Denham has also invited the groups to sit in on a briefing session detailing updated guidance on using personal information during campaigns. "Engagement with the electorate is vital to the democratic process," Denham said. "But if a party or campaign group fails to comply with the law, it may face enforcement action as well as reputational damage to its campaign." Editor's Note: The IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium will feature a breakout session on personal data and democracy.
