The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office fined Yahoo U.K. Services Limited 250,000 GBP following its parent company’s 2014 data breach affecting 500 million users. The ICO narrowed its focus to the 515,121 U.K. accounts compromised in the breach Yahoo U.K. Services was responsible for, determining the company did not take the proper technical measures to protect the information and for failing to take the necessary steps to ensure Yahoo complied with data protection standards. The penalty comes after Ireland’s Data Protection Commission ruled Yahoo violated EU law for failing to safeguard user data prior to the breach, although no financial penalty was administered.
