The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office has announced it has fined Smart Home Protection 90,000 euros for thousands of unlawful marketing calls made January 2017 through September 2018. The home security company made 118,000 calls to numbers registered on the Telephone Preference Service. Making calls to TPS numbers that have been listed for 28 days or more is against the law if it is done without consent. "Smart Home Protection has been in business for many years, so they should have been fully aware of their data protection obligations," ICO Director of Investigations Stephen Eckersley said. "It is a company’s responsibility to check the TPS and make sure that it has valid consent to make marketing calls. If they don’t, they can expect robust enforcement."
