The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office has fined British Telecommunications 77,000 GBP for sending nearly 5 million nuisance emails without consent. BT sent the emails between December 2015 and November 2016 in order to promote three charities. The telecom company accepted fault for sending emails to two of the charities but disputed the claim the third charity’s emails were direct marketing. The ICO ultimately disagreed with BT’s assertion. “Organisations have a responsibility to ensure they are acting within the law. Where they do not, the ICO can and will take action,” ICO Head of Enforcement Steve Eckersley said.
