The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office has published draft guidelines on the protection of children’s privacy when they use online services, the Financial Times reports. In the guidelines, the ICO bans the use of “nudge techniques” in order to launch further engagement, such as Facebook’s “like” button or “streaks” within the Snapchat app. Violations of the draft guidelines would result in penalties under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. “Reward loops or positive reinforcement techniques (such as likes and streaks) can also nudge or encourage users to stay actively engaged with a service, allowing the online service to collect more personal data,” the ICO report states. The agency has launched a consultation for its new code of practice and will accept comments until May 31. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
