The head of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers warned that if online databases are shut down, the internet will be at risk of becoming fragmented and warned of “severe effects,” EURACTIV reports. While the organization has proposed changes itself, ICANN CEO Göran Marby said he has been pushing EU data protection regulators for a legal opinion on how the system, which lists personal information associated with registered internet domain names, can comply with the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation. Marby said, “We don’t know today where the threshold is when it comes to the balance between the right to privacy and the need for information according to the GDPR because it has not been set.” Editor's Note: Florent Gastaud recently wrote about ICANN’s proposed solution in an article for The Privacy Advisor.

    It's really hard stuff if the online databases shut down. For online based business it's often necessary to investigate about the Provider before making the deal. And a possible privacy concern as legitimate interest stop this? Every shop I step in the real world I do know the owner or employee. This topic can not seriously reduced to an privacy issue, it depends on several different laws.
