IBM Chief Privacy Officer Cristina Cabella discusses becoming the tech company’s new data protection officer in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. Cabella describes her responsibilities as DPO, including the challenges of implementing the EU General Data Protection Regulation. “For a company such as IBM, that is so spread out geographically … with such a wide portfolio [of products and services], we overcome the challenge by making sure that the GDPR responsibility is not perceived as purely compliance,” Cabella said. She also talks about the importance of receiving consent for data processing and the ways machine learning and artificial intelligence are helping IBM comply with the GDPR.
