Every indication from the headlines that flooded inboxes and newsstands in the final days of 2013 and the first weeks of 2014 is that privacy will continue to be big news this year in every region of the globe. To continue to meet the needs of privacy pros—those who work for international firms, those who live in specific regions and those who are concerned with the privacy implications of living in an age where data privacy knows no borders—the IAPP is launching the IAPP Asia Privacy Forum, coming to Hong Kong and Singapore at the end of March and early April.

“As the world’s largest information privacy association, the IAPP has long been focused on global data protection developments,” said Hewlett-Packard Company Vice President and CPO and IAPP Board Chairman Scott Taylor, CIPP/US. “With privacy truly being an issue that is not contained by borders, we are looking forward to working more closely with privacy professionals in Asia and expanding our preeminent programming and certification opportunities in Hong Kong and Singapore.”

These one-day conferences will include expert speakers, intensive educational opportunities and networking centered on such timely topics as accountability, operational challenges and data protection regulation.

The IAPP Asia Privacy Forum-Hong Kong will be held on March 31 and will feature an opening keynote by Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) Allan Chiang. Since he took office in 2010, Chiang has worked to promote awareness and understanding of privacy rights among data users and, when necessary, has taken regulatory action—including the recent case against California Fitness where the PCPD determined the chain put the privacy of 220,000 customers at risk when it asked for too much personal information and stored the data on copies of their identity cards.

The IAPP Asia Privacy Forum-Singapore is set for April 2, with an opening keynote by Personal Data Protection Commission Chairman Leong Keng Thai, deputy chief executive and director-general (telecoms and post), Infocomm Development Authority. Leong has more than 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry.

Both events will feature a midday keynote from McAfee Vice President and CPO Michelle Dennedy, CIPM, CIPP/US, who is an IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award winner and the author of The Privacy Engineer’s Manifesto: Getting from Policy to Code to QA to Value.

Each event will feature educational and informative sessions from renowned privacy experts, including sessions like “Understanding APEC: The Nuts and Bolts,” “Privacy Governance: Building Privacy Into Your Entire Organization,” “Privacy and Cloud Computing: The Big Things to Consider When Using a Cloud Provider,” “Data Breach Prevention and Response” and “The Complications of Ubiquitous Mobile

The IAPP Asia Privacy Forum will also feature two days of training and certification testing in both cities.
