If data protection is like an organization’s immune system, accountability is the flu vaccine, enhancing it when it starts to show signs of wear and tear, Martin Abrams explains in an Information Accountability Foundation (IAF) post announcing the IAF’s newest paper, Enforcing Big Data Assessment Processes, which is the latest in its Big Data Ethics Initiative. “Accountability, in concept, is simple,” Abrams writes. “Organisations act in a responsible and answerable manner. The conceptual roadmap is the essential elements of accountability … Accountability 2.0 is the application of accountability principles to innovative data uses such as the Internet of Things and big data. IAF’s Big Data Ethics Initiative is the first venture into Accountability 2.0.”
