The Office of the Saskatchewan Information and Privacy Commissioner found seven health care professionals illicitly accessed the electronic health records of Humboldt Broncos team members involved in the fatal bus crash in April, CBC News reports. The commissioner’s report stated employees of eHealth Saskatchewan “understood the risk of snooping.” eHealth reported the record access in July after it found staff members accessed data without having “a legitimate need-to-know.” “This has been a major tragedy in our province and I'm disappointed that people got tempted,” Saskatchewan Information and Privacy Commissioner Ronald Kruzeniski said. “It's my job to work with others through education and legislative change [to] make the system work.” A spokesperson for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan said not all the accusations against the health care professionals meet the definition of “snooping.” CPSS Associate Registrar Bryan Salte added the rules for doctors to access patient information are unclear.
