As cross-border data flows grow, so too grows the adoption of cross-border data regulations. The resulting patchwork of rules and regulations makes it difficult not only to effectively enforce regulations across different jurisdictions, but also for firms to operate across markets. Governments are challenged to promote regulatory approaches that enable the movement of data while simultaneously ensuring that when data crosses a border it receives the desired protection, safeguard or oversight. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is currently undertaking analysis in this area.
