TechCrunch reports on the growing practice of collecting mobile-tracking data and the questions it raises for consumers as they navigate concerns. The article states that while there are concerns around the data-collection process in terms of what data is collected, who has access to it, and how it is being shared, “the potential for this same data to be monetized via auditing and compliance fees is even more problematic.” As more state and local governments move to utilize such data to generate revenue via congestion pricing and infrastructure fees, it not only creates business opportunities for companies to harvest and analyze mobile tracking data, but as the article also points out, its use to create an additional tax will raise some “pretty significant privacy concerns.”
