In an article for BuzzFeed News, Charlie Warzel writes that while the recent “raucous parade of privacy missteps has stoked a growing collective outrage about tech companies playing fast and loose with personal information,” there is a “collective confusion” surrounding the amount of user data online, making it hard for people to fully understand how it impacts users’ online safety. The report notes that company’s terms of service agreements are exploitative, that handing over personal data is essentially a requirement to participate in today’s internet and that while it may seem simple, users’ relationships with companies are incredibly complex and serve to stifle a meaningful conversation about privacy.
