In an article for the Australian Financial Review, Director of Corporate, External and Legal Affairs at Microsoft Australia and New Zealand Tom Daemen, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, writes that the collective impact of the U.S. Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act’s recent passage will lay the legal foundation for the modernization of data protection laws. In what he calls the “first stepping stone in a continuing journey,” Daemen wrote, “The CLOUD Act will reduce the likelihood of conflict over government access to data, while providing a clearer legal process to follow when conflicts arise.” Daemen affirmed Microsoft’s commitment to strengthening protections for customer data and stated the legislation would strengthen company efforts to ensure that customers are protected in a global data arena.
