The U.S. House Committee on Energy & Commerce Consumer Protection Subcommittee will host a hearing titled “Protecting Consumer Privacy in the Era of Big Data” Feb. 26, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Subcommittee Chair Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Parent Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, D-N.J., said in an email the hearing will discuss “the need for comprehensive data privacy and security legislation.” In a YouTube video, Schakowsky cited Facebook’s privacy practices and the Equifax data breaches as why the committee sought to hold the hearing. “We are beginning that conversation with the intention of developing legislation with the understanding that this self-regulation just isn’t working,” Schakowsky said. The hearing will come one day before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation’s hearing on a privacy framework.
