The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill aligning the privacy protections provided to substance-use-disorder patients with the HIPAA Privacy Rule, Health IT Security reports. The Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act will allow for SUD patient records to be disclosed without their written consent, as long as there are no HIPAA violations. Rather than criminal penalties for violation of the new bill, any offenses will fall under the HIPAA civil penalty structure. HR 6082 also makes illegal any discrimination based on SUD patient information. Meanwhile, Med Associates suffered a data breach potentially affecting up to 270,000 patients.
