All the Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have signed and sent a letter to Equifax, urging it to extend free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to breach victims for three years, The Hill reports. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote, "Given the sensitive nature of the personal information that was stolen — and the ability of criminals to store and use that information for years to come, we believe that the millions of U.S. consumers whose personal information was compromised in the Equifax data breach should receive the most robust form of credit protection and identity theft services available." Meanwhile, in reaction to the Equifax breach, the Massachusetts House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation that would make it easier for consumers to implement a security freeze and require quicker notification from companies of a security incident. State Attorney General Maura Healey said she looks forward to working with the State Senate on passing the bill.
