PerthNow reports on a program used by at least 12 health facilities to outsource audio recordings by doctors for dictation. General practitioner referrals, discharge papers and internal reports are included among the type of documents that are outsourced by workers in the eastern states, New Zealand, Canada and the UK. The audio recordings made by doctors are then transcribed by offshore third-party workers. One expert said, “This is a quick fix that has the potential for patient information to be compromised …” Meanwhile, Federal Health CIO Paul Madden said he expects “strong and sharp” reaction from groups opposed to a government plan to make its health records system opt-out.
