U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials logged 270 hours of aerial surveillance monitoring racial protests in 15 cities, The New York Times reports. Footage filmed by helicopters, airplanes and drones during demonstrations in cities, including Dayton, Ohio; Buffalo, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was sent to a branch of Customs and Border Protection, then fed into a digital network managed by DHS. Privacy advocates expressed concern over the use of the footage and impact of surveillance on protests.
