During a joint House subcommittee hearing on student privacy Wednesday, experts, industry, regulators and lawmakers explored and debated the current state of federal student privacy laws in the digital age. Overall, there was quite a bit of agreement on moving forward with student privacy issues—including greater participation by states and the need for more legal counsel in drafting contracts between school districts and vendors—but panelists did not agree on the existing scope of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and whether a federal mandate updating the statute is necessary.
