New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has announced that fitness apps Cardiio, Runtastic and My Baby’s Beat have agreed to pay a combined $30,000 in fines and revise their advertising claims and privacy policy disclosures to settle claims made after an investigation by his office, Ars Technica reports. The yearlong investigation discovered that the apps were advertising health information that wasn't FDA approved nor supported with health data, the report states. Additionally, the apps were not clear how user data could be shared with third parties. While Schneiderman acknowledged that mobile apps could be useful when they protected user data, he issued a warning to developers not above board, stating: “My office will not hesitate to take action against developers that disseminate unfounded information that is both deceptive and potentially harmful to everyday consumers.”
