Privacy concerns have been raised over the growing use of surveillance technology in Taiwan, the South China Morning Post reports. A recent report by the Taiwan Association for Human Rights argues citizens’ digital human rights have been violated for years as the government quietly conducts communication surveillance. At a hearing held last week sought to address “digital human rights,” legislator Yu Mei-nu expressed concern about the government’s surveillance techniques for online user communication, adding, “There is no law specifically regulating this kind of surveillance and protecting the privacy of the internet users in Taiwan.” Mei-nu called for transparency measures to be added to the Communications Protection and Surveillance Act that would protect digital privacy.
