As the U.S. Federal Trade Commission holds a series of hearings to review privacy regulations, CreativeFuture, a group representing producers, filmmakers and other content creators, has raised concern over adopting laws similar to the EU General Data Protection Regulation, Variety reports. Arguing European privacy laws have led to a reduction in available data provided by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, they note increased difficulty combating piracy. In a letter to the FTC, they wrote, “A misapplication of [European Union privacy] principles in the United States would be painfully detrimental to the 5.7 million Americans who depend on copyright to make a living — as yet another tool that aids in mitigating this theft is stripped away under the guise of privacy protections.”
