Several Indian government entities urged the Joint Select Committee examining the Personal Data Protection Bill to consider exempting them from privacy legislation, The Indian Express reports. Representatives from the Union Home Ministry, National Crimes Record Bureau and others argued that personal data access was important to the "sensitive" nature of their work while also citing COVID-19 as another factor for needing access. Members of Parliament countered with questions regarding assurances of no government abuse associated with potential access.
