In a Google blog post, SVP and General Counsel Kent Walker points to two right-to-be-forgotten cases currently pending in the Court of Justice of the EU and company concerns they could threaten the tenuous balance between citizens' privacy rights and the public's right to know. Four individuals in one case argue that "all mentions of criminality or political affiliation should automatically be purged from search results, without any consideration of public interest." The second case would determine whether delisting requests be honored not just in Europe, but around the world. Walker contends that such a delisting regime "runs contrary to the basic principles of international law" and that, to do so, "would encourage other countries, including less democratic regimes, to try to impose their values on citizens in the rest of the world." European countries and institutions have until Nov. 20 to provide comment to the CJEU.
