The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has authorized the Wing Aviation unit belonging to Google's parent company Alphabet to begin using a fleet of unpiloted aircrafts to deliver consumer goods within a rural area in Blacksburg, Virginia, The Wall Street Journal reports. The FAA's approval comes despite a prior industrywide belief that such decisions on drone activity wouldn't be handed down until 2020 or 2021. The approval does not address security concerns regarding widespread drone operations or the current restrictions on commercial drone flights over populated areas.
