Google is appealing the CNIL’s formal notice that the company honor right-to-be-forgotten requests globally. In a blog post, Google Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleischer writes, “We’ve worked hard to implement the right-to-be-forgotten ruling thoughtfully and comprehensively in Europe, and we’ll continue to do so … But as a matter of principle, we respectfully disagree with the idea that a national data protection authority can assert global authority to control the content that people can access around the world.” Fleischer also suggests a global implementation would have a “chilling effect” on the Internet. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the Association of National Advertisers is urging the Federal Trade Commission to dismiss a Consumer Watchdog complaint that claims not honoring takedown requests is an unfair and deceptive trade practice.
