Germany's Federal Court of Justice ruled that Facebook accounts can be inherited, giving heirs the right to access the Facebook accounts of deceased relatives, Reuters reports. A federal court spokeswoman said the verdict has “very far-reaching consequences” and will affect other social media accounts. A spokesperson for Facebook said, “While we respectfully disagree with today’s decision ... the lengthy process shows how complex the issue under discussion is.” German Journalist Alex Fanta added, “The ruling should be an impetus for German policymakers to regulate the digital estate.”
