It’s finally final for three separate pieces of privacy legislation in the EU. On 4 May, the Official Journal of the European Union published the texts of the General Data Protection Regulation, officially Regulation 2016/679; Directive 2016/680, governing the handling of data in law enforcement situations; and the Passenger Name Record Directive, officially Directive 2016/681. This creates something of a countdown clock for privacy professionals. As the GDPR goes into effect two years and 20 days following its publishing in the Official Journal, 25 May 2018, takes on new portent.
